The steps below cover one of five main staff workflows for using Echo360 via Canvas, ie adding an existing Echo video to Canvas via Canvas’ text editor

The video that covers the same steps as the below can be found here:

Adding an Echo360 video in Canvas (embedding vs linking)

General notes

  • In addition to videos, you can upload presentation files (such as PowerPoint) and pdfs to Echo

  • Whenever you upload content to Echo, it’s added to your personal Echo library:

    • You can view and manage your Echo library from within Canvas.

    • Zoom recordings and classroom captures organized by the AV department should also appear in your Echo library.

  • There are three places you can link to Echo videos from within a Canvas course page:

    • the text editor

    • the Modules screen, and

    • the course’s blue navigation menu.

Of these, linking via the the text editor is recommended. Using the Modules screen or navigation menu is not preferred because both require using Echo's old section and class system, which is likely to be phased out.

Notes specific to this workflow

  • You can link in Canvas to a video that’s either in your personal Echo360 library or in an Echo360 collection

  • You can’t upload a video directly into an Echo360 collection.
If you want to link from Canvas to a video in an Echo360 collection, you must first upload the video to your personal Echo360 library, add this video to the collection, then link to the video from the collection.
For this reason, you can’t upload a video and link to it at the same time from anywhere else in Echo360 apart from your Echo360 personal library.

WORKFLOW

[COVER LINKING FROM BOTH THE USER’S PERSONAL ECHO360 LIBRARY AND FROM AN ECHO360 COLLECTION]

1. Navigate to a NIDA Canvas course that you want to add the video to

2. Go to a screen in the course that offers the text editor. In this example, we'll use a Page.

Searching only works if you start typing from the beginning of the title. Echo won't find your video if you start with the middle or end of the title.

10. Click to select the video you want to link to

At this point you get to choose between embedding the video into the Canvas page or just creating a simple link to it on the page. Both options are described below

OPTION 1. ADDING A VIDEO BY EMBEDDING THE VIDEO IN THE CANVAS PAGE

If the Link switch is turned off (ie to the left), then Canvas will embed the video in the page rather than linking to it

REMAINING STEPS

The remaining steps in the workflow are the same whether you embedded or created a simple link to your video…

Click on the video to test it. It should then open in a new tab in your browser, allowing you to play the video. Click to close the new tab to return to the main tab.

(If you see the ‘Not Yet Ready’ message, you will need to wait for Echo to process the video before it becomes playable. You can check if the processing has finished by refreshing the browser tab (hit the F5 key).)

It should then open in a new tab in your browser, allowing you to play the video. Click to close the new tab to return to the main tab

SUMMARY

29. You've now finished linking to videos that already existed in Echo. You did this one of two ways:
- by embedding the video
- by creating a simple link to the video.
You checked that the video then played in Canvas once you’d linked to it from Echo.

You've now finished both embedding and creating a link to videos that already existed in Echo
