Description

The Microsoft Authenticator app allows for easy and very secure access to your Microsoft apps and services without waiting for an SMS code and typing in a 6-digit code. This method of Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) works over the internet meaning it will work anywhere in the world, so long as you have an internet connection. It also offers an offline backup through a 6-digit code in case you don’t have access to the internet.

Setting up this method is quick and easy and allows for access to NIDA services such as Remote Access.

Installation and Setup

1. Follow this link: My Sign-Ins to the “Security Info“ page and press the “Add sign-in method“ button.
   
   

   Open

   

    

2. Select “Authenticator App” from the drop box and follow the instructions on screen

3. Then click Next on this screen
   
   

    

4. Then click ‘Next’ on this prompt that shows
   
   

    

5. On your mobile device, open the Apple App Store or Google Play Store, search for and install “Microsoft Authenticator” by Microsoft.

6. Open the Microsoft Authenticator app on your mobile device. Allow Notifications if prompted.

   1. If you see a “Scan a QR code” button, click that.

   2. Otherwise, you can go to Add Account by clicking '+' on top right corner > Work or school account > Scan QR code
      
      

7. Allow the Authenticator app to use the camera on your phone and then point the camera at the QR code on the your computer/laptop screen. Be careful to not allow other people to see/use this QR code.
   
   

    

   
   After you successfully scan the QR code, your account will be added into the Authenticator app.
   Click Next to continue.
   
   

8. Microsoft will send a test notification to your Authenticator app for approval.
   Approve this request on your mobile device once received
   
   

   
   Then click Next on this prompt
   
   

    

9. Some services at NIDA require you to change your default sign-in method to “Authenticator App - notification”. If your current sign in method is not “Authenticator App - notification”, simply click on the “Change” button next to the current default sign in method.

Then select “Microsoft Authenticator - notification” and click “Confirm”.

You now have the Microsoft Authenticator app set up.
